South of Market Mental Health Initiative

Providing Culturally Responsive Mental Health Support for Underserved Communities in San Francisco

The South of Market Mental Health Initiative addresses the critical lack of accessible, culturally competent mental health services for underserved youth, families, and community workers in San Francisco’s South of Market (SOMA) neighborhood. This community, which includes a high concentration of people of color, immigrants, and low-income families, faces ongoing exposure to trauma stemming from poverty, crime, substance abuse, housing instability, and systemic neglect. These factors have resulted in heightened rates of anxiety, depression, and emotional distress—particularly among youth and frontline workers. The COVID-19 pandemic further intensified these challenges, with West Bay program participants, their families and the staff serving them, isolating youth and overwhelming community-based support systems.

To address these issues, in 2021, West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center launched a comprehensive, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive mental health program that eliminates barriers such as insurance requirements and language access. Our approach includes individual and group therapy, school-based mental health services, and support for community workers experiencing vicarious trauma. Services are delivered by a diverse team of licensed clinicians and trained interns who reflect the cultural backgrounds of the community. By integrating mental health care into the school, community settings, and support networks, we are reducing stigma, increasing access, and fostering long-term emotional well-being and resilience for SoMa’s most vulnerable populations.

Services include:

  • Individual & Group Therapy for youth, families, and community members
  • School-Based Mental Health Support at Bessie Carmichael Elementary—the only public school in SoMa with highest rate of homeless youth
  • Consultation & Training for Educators & Community Workers addressing vicarious trauma and burnout
